Statement

Watercolors don't want to be controlled and I like that. It takes problem-solving to work any mishaps into the painting. Somehow that may even improve it. I tape my paper to a board and paint on an easel as if I’m oil painting. Painting in that way has helped me balance controlling where the water goes and letting it flow naturally.

The experiences and people in my paintings come from my life. My children, sisters, and family are usual models for my art. There are topics of love, family, childhood, and the complexities of bittersweet relationships. These small windows into my personal space add a voyeuristic and exhibitionist dynamic. The viewers may feel nostalgic as they may be able to relate in some form. Or they may gain a different perspective.
I have learned to be vulnerable by sharing parts of my life in art. I am furthering the exploration of the many parts that make up my identity as a Black woman. All of it unapologetically, of course.
