Linda Lewis

Statement

I am driven to create paintings that gather the infinite beauty around us onto the confines of a canvas. To capture delicate flowers, or an inspiring landscape I use a limited palette of tonal values.so that my work looks organic, and feels ethereal, natural and flowing.  My background in design aids in creating  the relationships between color, line and form and helps to establish the feeling I am trying to impart.

I was born in Nevada and was raised outside New York and Pittsburgh.  Many summers were spent in Massachusetts by the sea.   I now live in the city of Richmond, Virginia in a beloved old row home with my husband and collie.  My greatest influence was my mother, Joan Hartnett Smith,  who was an award winning artist herself, often painting flower still lifes  and garden scenes.

Setting up a still life of flowers or setting out to paint en plein air are my preferred methods of working, however, I am not averse to using photographs or relying on memories.  A variety of paint brushes, brayers and scrapers are used to achieve my desired effect.  My works are images of places and objects that have profound significance to me.  Those who view my paintings will sense my love for these subjects and the pleasure I receive in painting them.
